The Second Street Transformation project is a multi-phase renovation and upgrade of an existing, aged transportation corridor through downtown Macon. The project is based on the National Complete Streets Coalition’s concept of safe, comfortable, and convenient access to community destinations and public places–whether walking, driving, bicycling, or taking public transportation. The Complete Streets concept integrates people and place in the planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of our transportation networks.

The second phase of the project extended the Vision Block from Poplar Street (where it previously ended) to where the future MidCity Square would begin. The extension now includes new sidewalks and lighting, crosswalks, storm drainage, benches and landscaping, bicycle lanes, turn lanes for vehicles, and more.

The project is on-going with upcoming phases tying the Mercer University campus to the downtown area and the Centreplex Convention Center. This will include two bridges over a perpendicular roadway and the Norfolk-Southern Railway “S” Line rail.

Better sidewalks, bike lanes, and an easy way for people to get to and from their homes and centers of activity is a benefit for our entire community.
